mapping music in chicago

For my final project, I would like to create a map of music within Lincoln Park. (I am not certain yet if I will map all of Lincoln Park or just the area surrounding DePaul.) Although this is a broad topic, I think it would make for a more interesting map because I would have a lot to include. I would like to include concert venues, music stores, and music I hear from the street. These are the main things I have thought to include but if I think of more aspects of music that I can map, I will. I am interested in this topic because I really like music and am planning on minoring in music business. My thought process was that if I choose a topic I am passionate about, it will make for a better quality product and I will learn more about that topic in the process.

*My map would look something like this, only it would cover a larger area and would be more detailed. I would also add color and make it more visually appealing.

In response to Malchik, is walking a luxury, a privilege, a necessity, or a right, and why? What are the threats to walking? How does where you live influence how you live?

Although walking is said to be a right, I believe it has become more of a privilege. As shown through Raquel Nelson’s story and the definition of jaywalking, laws of the road are made to suit drivers. Because the majority of Americans drive as transportation, walkers are often disregarded and walking is seen as a last resort. Despite the many benefits of walking, streets are usually not designed with walkability in mind. This makes the right to walk much less accessible and less people will take advantage of it. In lower class areas in particular, the way roads are designed often makes walking dangerous. If one is walking in an area that is not designed for walkability, they can even be stopped by the police, shown by Malchik’s story of her friend from Mississippi. Even though walking is technically a right, exercising this right can often be unsafe. Because of this, those with access to safe walking paths and sidewalks are privileged. (162)
