Trick or Treat

a poem for the holiday

The days grow crisp and short
while the sun sets.
And all the festivities
are going to begin.

On the streets you see ghosts
and witches and ghouls.
A child’s laughter inside
gives the weakest of men chills.
They knock on doors
with bags in hand.
Happily singing,
“Trick or treat!”
while candy is dropped
in little bags.

Then down the road
at a nearby church,
there’s games
and hay rides
and pumpkins to paint.
They welcome everyone
that’s not in the spirit
and make sure everyone
feels the wonders of fall.

Over at the schools
cars are lined up.
For the more fearful parents
afraid of the legends
of evil men and candy
when kids trick or treat.
So they put candy in car trunks
and make the night sweeter.

When the pumpkins are carved
and bellies are full of candy
there’s hot cider and donuts
for the tired families.
They watch outside
as the leaves fall around them.
A tribute to the coming end
of a beautiful season.
