Diao Aiqing was born in Shengao, Jiangyan District, Taizhou, Jiangsu, in March 1976. She was the eldest of two children. According to her older sister, Diao Aihua, their family was impoverished, and Aihua dropped out of school in order to find work. Diao, meantime, maintained her studies and excelled academically. Diao enrolled successfully at Nanjing University.

In October 1995, she arrived in Nanjing to study at the university’s School of Adult Education. She studied computer applications at the Department of Information Management.

Diao stormed out of her dormitory on January 10, 1996, claiming she was going for a walk following a disagreement with her roommates. A street cleaner discovered a parcel lying in the deep snow nine days later. The woman spotted some freshly slaughtered meat inside. It was a part of Diao.
