Saturday Morning Zombies

“Sounds like you used to be a zombie.”

Olivia poured herself a cup of coffee. She walked from the kitchen to the sunroom to watch the sunrise. It wasn’t uncommon for her to be the first one up on a Saturday morning. Her husband, Ted, was still asleep in their bed upstairs. His typical Saturday wake-up was at least two hours after her, since he often spent his Friday nights watching TV well past midnight.

Her son, Franklin, might very well have been up as she sat on the couch with the mug warming her hands. He liked to stay in his room for most of the morning, playing his games.

When Olivia entered the kitchen to refill her mug, she heard the stairs creak. The steps weren’t heavy, so she knew it wasn’t Ted.

“Franklin,” she called out. “Welcome to the world of the living.”

Franklin entered the kitchen, rubbing his eyes.

“You’re so weird,” he said. “It’s not like I was a zombie.”

“You could’ve fooled me.”

Franklin rolled his eyes and cracked a smile.

“I can’t believe you drink that stuff,” he said, pointing to the mug in her hands.

“I didn’t drink it while I was still in middle school,” she said. “Come to think of it, I didn’t drink it in high school, either. It was my first semester of college when I discovered this wonderful life-giving elixir.”

“Life-giving, huh? Sounds like you used to be a zombie.”

“When I had big exams to study for, it definitely felt that way. Anything I can make you for breakfast? I’m in a scrambled eggs mood. How about you?”

“I was just going to have some cereal.”

“Cereal? On a Saturday? You’ve got to do better than that. Come on, let’s look at what’s in the refrigerator.”

“Why can’t my mornings be normal? My friend Kevin says he gets to have cereal whenever he wants.”

Olivia shrugged.

“If you want cereal, then go ahead.” She walked over to the refrigerator and opened it up. “But I see some veggies in here that want to be partnered with some scrambled eggs before making their way into my belly.”
