Benefits of raised beds and how to make one

Many of the experienced gardeners create raised beds to grow plants. All of the intensive methods use raised beds and grow vegetables much more closely than traditional row methods and therefore require less land — thus requiring less water and labour while reducing the need for weeding. Raised beds offer so many advantages over row gardening-

Size of the bed

There’s nothing like an ideal size it totally depends on the space you have growing.

As far as shape goes square and rectangular beds are economically efficient and easy to work around.

A raised bed is essentially a bottomless and topless box laid on ground and filled with soil. The boxes can be built from wood, plastic boards, red bricks, concrete bricks, broken rocks and other materials. Once you have filled your raised bed with required amount of soil mix you need to surround them with a box like structure which will hold the soil and limit the erosion.

Depending on your budget you can make it from plywood planks or you can make it from bricks like I did in my backyard. Those who don’t have land to build can also built an artificial raised beds on your roof.
