Generation Z or Generation Zoloft?

Mental health professionals and college students alike are aware of this epidemic and are looking to make some positive changes.

One of Fordham University’s on campus therapists, Dr. Jeffrey Ng, noted how this is the most anxious generation, but also the most open generation when it comes to mental health issues like anxiety.

As to why Generation Z and Millennials are the most anxious generation yet, both Dr. Ng and Fordham University Freshman, Sabrina Boyd, agreed that these generations have different stressor that simply weren’t present in past generations.

Being known and the most anxious generation may seem like a heavy burden, but Boyd spoke about the future optimistically.

She believes is we can remain open-minded and understanding about anxiety, there could be hope for this generation of anxiety sufferers.

Mental Illness has become an epidemic plaguing our children and teens across the country.

The Huffington post recently reported that millenials are the most anxious generation yet.

Both students, such as Sabrina Boyd a Freshman who has suffered with anxiety for years,

and Dr. Ng a psychologist at Fordham’s Mental Health services agree

Dr. Ng: Without a doubt and that’s not unique to Fordham I think nationally the trend has been an increase in demand for counseling centers and services all over the country.

Narr: The reason for this recent increase is not a mystery. Both Dr. Ng as well and Boyd, have identified some reasons why.

Dr. Ng: One of the things that I think we’ve seen in the last 5,6,7 years that really stands out to us as clinician is how hard students are on themselves

Narr: Boyd echoes the sentiment of immense pressure in her description of her personal struggles

SABRINA: Back in the 1950s, people are graduating from high schools were able to get paying jobs to support a family. Today, people laugh at you if you go to a community college, a lot of the time depending on what area you grew up in.

NARR : Although anxiety is a disease that has been profoundly affecting the american youth, all hope is not lost

Dr Ng: I think nationally there has been decreases in stigmas and I think students are more open and receptive and will to acknowledge their vulnerabilities and struggles than they used to be

CONCLUSION: The way to combat this epidemic? Well, Boyd does not think there is a cure. However, keeping the conversation open and creating an accepting environment we can prove to be worthy opponents against the war on anxiety.
