The top 5 things I have learned from two months of apprenticeship at UPS

This month marks two months of apprenticeship at UPS. In these months, I have been part of the Transactions Systems Programming Team, where I have learned more about working in the Corporate IT world than I ever could have dreamed of.

As an apprentice, I’ve discovered that it is essential to have the right attitude, which means you have to approach any task or job with determination, and enthusiasm. Indeed, you can have the best technical skills, training, and experience, but they would mean nothing without the right attitude.

I have learned that it is very important to be curious about everything. Having a curious mindset can push you to find the better solutions, and improvements. Moreover, asking questions can broaden your technical and interpersonal skills.

Communication is the key to success in a professional environment. It isn’t just about mitigating conflicts, good communication is also an important factor in building good relationships with others. Furthermore when it comes to productivity, efficiency, engagement, and growth, good communication skill is an integral element in achieving successes.

During these two months, I have learned that it is crucial that you document what you have learned, feedback given by the manager, and achievements I have accomplished. This has helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses. In addition, it can be a very powerful tool to promote yourself within the team, department, and organization.

In IT world, we often encounter different problems on the daily basis, thus a good problem-solving skill needs to be cultivated. I’ve learned that the more time I spend understanding the problems, the more effective the solutions. It is far better to take time to redefine the problems until you get to the root cause than look for the solutions immediately. This can save time and produce creative solutions.
