Week 1

I knew from the start, that upon entering this program, I am punching above my weight. This is uncharted territory for me as a Sport Science student basically the past decade and that I will have to be the hardest worker in the room in order to play catch up to everyone.

Hi, I am Fadzil Ghazali and I am a Sport Science and Exercise and Health graduate from the University of Western Australia. Welcome to my profile as I pen down my adventure as a Venture Builder at NTUitive.

If I could summarize the entire week for you, it would be that it has been crazy. I kept hearing words and abbreviations used that I have never heard in my life. Listening to all of the 7 projects that the VB18 trainees will be going through felt like a kid opening presents on Christmas Day. Every single project sounded really interesting and there were one or two that caught my eye. I was open to whichever project that I was allocated in as I do love a good challenge and new experience. Upon hearing that I was put into the DLT Fund Admin project, I soon realized that I had a steep hill to climb as I was not well-versed in the finance side of things and hearing the words and lingo used to explain the particular project was honestly very confusing. As soon as got home from NTU, I scrambled to understand what I was working on. Going to work on Thursday and the topic was further explained on what the group of 6 of us will be doing. My goal for this week was to at least understand the foundations of Finance in order to grasp the concept of the project that I will be working on more clearly. Safe to say, I know more about the topic than I have one week ago. It may not mean much to some but I will take these small wins.

If I am being very frank with you folks reading this, not knowing about the subject at hand made me feel like the dumbest person in the room. It was rather disheartening to learn that fact. However, I can either dwell on this issue or make some changes in order to not feel that way again. This would be the perfect opportunity to learn and grow. This does gives me a couple of days to be a finance whiz, which with persistence and sacrifice, would be possible (Maybe not whiz but have a good understanding of the subject). One thing that my EIR, Mr Edward Foo, mentioned that struck me was that in this fast paced society of ours, it is important to be a Generalist knowing a broad field as compared to being a Specialist and knowing just a single subject well. By the end of this one year journey, I do want to end up being a Generalist.

Categorizing myself in Football Manager (my favourite game fyi) lingo, I am a wonderkid with huge potential just waiting to be trained by the best to unlock my potential. I am excited to be with the best in the industry and alongside a team of trainees who are some of the most supportive and intelligent people I know. I do look forward to our journey together over the next year. Onward and upward.
