An electric blanket couch

This idea comes from young Tyler Silsby of Carson City. He woke up one morning with the certainty that combining an electric blanket with a couch would be an excellent invention.

This idea is an example of a ‘low-tech’ play that doesn’t require a bunch of computer chips to work out. In fact, the prototype is quite easy: grab an old couch and a few old (but working) electric blankets. Sew them onto the couch, then see what happens.

A quick google search reveals that some people have already considered the idea and executed on it. Here’s an example of a “heated furniture cover”:

A heated furniture cover isn’t as integrated as heated upholstery, and if you’ve ever tried living with furniture covers you know why they aren’t anyone’s first choice: they slip around, they get folded and matted, and generally they leave you feeling a sense of separation from the loving envelopment you seek.

Maybe there is room in the world for a heated couch. The down side of such integration is that, well, it’s integrated. If something breaks, it is much easier to get a new heated cover than to dig into the internals of a heated couch to find out what’s going wrong.

This is true for apps too. Tight integration means more difficult troubleshooting when things go wrong. We like to execute ideas where integration and simplicity find common ground. That is to say, there is no simpler solution, or the benefits of integration deliver advantages that make the integration worthwhile.
