In the Face

Is it not interesting how much you can read about a person just by looking at their face? Speaking, writing, and reading are simple forms of conveyance and communication, but we can get just as much from seeing and sending out physical signals. One of the most prominent component of sending such signals, or body language, is the face. From simple things like when you see someone frown you know they are upset. And vice versa with smiles. Bags underneath the eyes means someone is tired. Krinkling of the nose leading one to think someone has gotten a whift of something rotten. Sneers, leers, squints, tongue-out, crossed eyes, and so many more! And all with different notions and indications of what is going on underneath the surface. And to think that most of the time we are unaware. Our sub-conscience signaling to these around us our status.
Children are particularly great examples of this. I can just imagine the face of a stubborn three-year-old upset at the fact of having a curfew. Eyes puffy and red from crying, tear streaks, the frown-of-the-century made by muscles forcing the mouth in an upside down “u.” To think of all these signs being made but the child is not conscientiously making these their face do this. The flurry of physical signs are made in reaction to a cause. Yet, they did not have to train for such a reaction as this. One could say it is a natural response.
We can also think about this in a more positive light. Now, try to smile. If you do choose to smile you are conscientiously making the muscles in your face form to what you define as a smile. I do admit that we do make the choice to smile in many situations, however other smiles are what I would call a natural response or instinct. The sight of an adorable beagle puppy. Receiving service of any kind. Or just the thought of happiness can pull at the corners of your mouth upwards.
So much is conveyed through languages that do not have words. So look into someone’s face and see what you can receive. I am sure it is more than all these words.
