There Will Always Be More Opportunities

Every “failure” lands you with new knowledge to use in this moment.

I was late in 2015. This is when I started blogging. Typing behind a keyboard and hitting publish. I thought the whole world was watching. In a way, it was like that. Although, I wasn’t thinking about how I cared(or didn’t care about) other bloggers in that same way. I skimmed and jumped from article to article reading but labored over every word I produced.

I had dreams of money falling from the sky! As a below-average Economics major, I thought I could beat the game! “Daytrading” back in 2014 with a friend we planned it all. He made money. I muddled around losing some and winning. Hit it “big” but then gave it back. For months I didn’t lose much but I didn’t make anything in the end. I was left with learning. Patience in day trading is extremely important. The number one thing that I learned was that there will always be more opportunities.

My life has been filled with being inflexible and resistant to changing course. I knew about Bitcoin years ago but didn’t act. My students asked me if I was a TikToker in 2017. I just opened a TikTok account last week. Somewhere in 2018, a friend asked me to start a Stoic philosophy podcast, I said no. In April I will put out a daily blog on medium centered around Ryan Holiday’s Daily Stoic. Better late than never? Not sure, but I will be ready to jump to the next early adopter thing this time.

You don’t have to be a jack of all trades, at least not right now. Medium writing is where I want to spend the majority of my internet time now. I might go into YouTube or other video later but right now writing is where I belong.

Change on the outside and surface happens at lightning speed in 2022. But, most don’t have their values and inner workings figured out. That is troubling and can fuck up our psychology. Uploading deep unpolished parts of ourselves is dangerous. In a way, we are always evolving and changing. Yet, there are some things that our core nature, and time is the only thing that can teach you those. Take a time out if the internet ever becomes too much. Come back to us when you are ready.

There will always be more opportunities to make money, succeed, or make connections to make the new Facebook. Just because you were late to the party for blogging or didn’t make a podcast when you had the opportunity to doesn’t mean you will do that this time.

All writers are not the same. All teachers are not the same. Every day trader is different. The list goes on and on. Yet, there are common traits between the ones that are successful over the long term. They are consistent, have a system, core values, and aren’t in it for the money. Although money usually follows.

Don’t beat yourself up about missed opportunities. If you do that, then you will miss the opportunity in this moment. There will always be new opportunities…
